Isaacs, M., Week 5

Welcome back for my last and final blog post! This week was full of stops in New York City!

Our first stop was an advertising agency called Big Spaceship. Being a smaller company, the proved that this job was a community built on passion. This company is on the smaller end and what stood out to me was they all saw what they did as a passion. This company is not built on the sole idea of just being successful, but rather it is built on culture. The founder is around with an office in the center of the building to always be their for his company. While they do have specific departments, each department overlaps working side by side with each other in order to produce the best possible work they can. Through collaboration, they can see all sides of the client they are working with which aids in their success. The cases they showed us put it all into perspective.

Next we met with Glenys Salas, an Elmira College alumni. Working in digital marketing, she shared her experiences after college. She started by introducing trends with marketing in todays world. The trend I had was "marking to working women". She went on to discuss what it is she does, ending by sharing tips she has learned as essential. She emphasized that experience is key in this industry and is important to decipher what it is you really want to do.

Our last stop in New York City was to see Andy Hilfiger, which I found to be a truly inspirational experience. Andy shared his story with us and how he came to be, but more importantly he showed how things are not always going to be easy or go how we plan them to. The takeaway from this is remembering to learn from such mistakes, which guide his business today. It was exciting for him to show us his new fall line as well as the collaboration that is going into it, all guided through his interests. He discussed how it is important to learn what it is the market truly wants and discusses what guides his decision for his brands.

Thank you for tuning into my blog these past five weeks! Special shoutout to Professor Wolfe for making these amazing opportunities happen!

Tracey, P., Week 5

For our fifth and final week of class we went on the longest but most adventurous field trip yet. At 5 am we set off to New York City to visit a marketing firm, eat lunch with a women who went to Elmira and now works at a marketing firm, and finally we met with fashion designer Andy Hilfiger. This week was entertaining for me, as I do not like the city it was fun to explore and view all the great business sites. The only event that would of made this better was visiting Trump Tower.

First we went to Big Spaceship, a marketing firm in Brooklyn. We learned an "nontraditional practice" they used. For example they had three dogs in the work area, something I personally wouldn't approve of. The learning experience was great, we learned how they operate and how they use digital technology to create advertisements.

Big Spaceship

Next we sat down, ate lunch with an Elmira College alumni. It was a great lunch and dessert as well as learning about digital media and how companies use it. We were explained to how marketing companies use digital media to better understand demographics and to understand what target market to appeal to.

The end of our field concluded with meeting famous fashion designer Andy Hilfiger. Meeting a celebrity was entertaining but even better was learning the fashion industry. Personally I am not interested in the fashion industry but understanding the business behind it, inventory, shipping, etc. was fascinating to hear.

Collins, A., Week 5

Welcome Back!

I was so sad this was the last week of class but it was filled with fun endevors including a trip to New York City. We got to see different attractions in city that covered different areas of media and entertainment. Take a look below to see the amazing places we got to see

Big Spaceship, Dumbo, Brooklyn

Our first stop was to Big Spaceship in the Dumbo district of Brooklyn. They are an advertising agency who work on really cool projects for their clients. For example, they did a project on Youtube which worked with different types of video. I enjoyed hearing about their projects and the different departments in their company. The cool part about their departments are that their employees are not tied to specific departments. They all overlap and work collaboratively to ensure top innovation.

Glenys Flaitz

We enjoyed a delicious lunch while we met with Elmira College alumna Glenys Flaitz who works for Ai Media Group in the city. She gave us a very detailed insight into the latest trends in media and content marketing. The latest trend in content marketing is seeing the sites consumers are viewing and using those sites in the advertising they see on other pages they visit. For example, if I view the Elmira College website, then go visit a news website, I will most likely see an ad for Elmira College on the news site. The hottest trend in media marketing is the uprise in Instagram. Companies are now using Instagram to promote their products and services which is reaching the younger consumers.

Andy Hilfiger

We had the wonderful pleasure of meeting Elmira native designer Andy Hilfiger at his studio in Midtown. He showed us the collection he is working on and talked about the methods he uses to market his clothes. It was interesting to hear about how they slowly distribute collections and then send more as the popularity increases. I also loved seeing his recently designed dresses and really wanting to try them on.

Gardner, W., Week 5

The experiences I had in the course are some that I will never forget, and as the course has come to a close, I cannot think of any other way I would have liked to spend this term. This final week was filled with the last few facilitators, a trip to New York City, and our presentations on our case studies.

The facilitators this week did a great job wrapping up the books we had been reading throughout the term, which I am glad we read because they were good reads with lots of information and input on the entertainment, media, and sports industries.

Tuesday's trip to NYC was filled with a variety of great experiences with Big Spaceship in the Bronx, Glenys Flaitz of Ai Media Group, and Andy Hilfiger of Artistix Fashion. Despite the long bus ride, the day was very exciting and enjoyable as it was my first time visiting NYC. Big Spaceship was my first look inside a small-size ad agency and I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the workplace and the variety of clients they work with. Glenys Flaitz gave us a wonderful presentation over lunch and was very informative regarding currents trends in the entertainment industry. Meeting Andy Hilfiger was fantastic and I really enjoyed the work he showed us as well as the information he provided us with regarding the fashion industry and how it is a huge part of the entertainment, media, and sports industries with celebrities, musicians, and athletes collaborating with clothing companies.

I really enjoyed the case study I worked on which was about Warner Brothers and Harry Potter as this is a topic I was very interested in. This case allowed for everything we had been reading about and learning this term to come full-circle as it was being applied to the case. This course has further opened my eyes about these industries and provided me with a variety of looks behind-the-scenes, giving me much to think about as I begin looking at a career path in the world of marketing.

I would like to thank Professor Wolfe for providing us with the opportunity to go on these trips and allowing us to learn through the variety of great experiences we had. It was truly an unforgettable term that I wish I could repeat all over again.

Sponable, M., Week 5

During our trip to New York City, we met representatives of Big Spaceship and Andy Hilfiger himself! This was my favorite experiential leaning of the term.

Image result for oikos be unstoppable youBig Spaceship was an incredible experience. We viewed several of their case studies and projects. It was refreshing to see their creative environment surrounded by inspiration and hardworking team members. Their facility was the manifestation of transparency. With walls of glass and an approachable staff (including the founder and CEO) everyone can support one another. It was great having the opportunity to ask them questions about their work, environment, and responsibilities.

Image result for andy hilfiger artistix                                                                              Andy Hilfiger was kind enough to take time to invite us to his studio and show us his creative space. A new line he is working on is called Artistix, inspired by the paintings to the left. These works of art inspired the Harvest collection. Mr. Hilfiger gave us insight to the fashion industry and expired the different stages of the creative process. From inspiration to an idea board, to selecting the top ideas. From there creating samples, holding a fashion show, and then sending the best of the best to be mass produced.

In both advertising and fashion, companies must know their target market and how to set themselves apart. It is key to be able to find where a brand's deficit is and gather information as to why that area is not producing intended results. From there, companies can create a campaign to appeal to that audience. Whether that action is bring together painting and fashion, or yogurt and snack time, it is important to measure both success and where to improve.

This week we also did case studies. My group's study was on Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows Part Two's release date. Our given problem was whether to keep the current date and going head to head with several competing films, or to change the date and develop marketing strategies accordingly. We chose to release the weekend prior to Halloween and to build off the holiday's hype. Our marking strategies included merchandising, costume competitions, and utilizing Warner
Bros. connections.

Chivers,K., Week 5

Welcome Back!

In this week of experiential learning, we went to New York City, also known as the Big Apple. New York City is extremely large, and has many opportunities in terms of careers and companies. We visited two different companies and agencies: Big Spaceship and Artistix.

Big Spaceship

At Big Spaceship, I saw first-hand what a smaller advertising agency looked like and how the culture was. The culture was very relaxed and trendy, which was very interesting to see. Everyone knew each other, including the CEO and founder of the company, which breaks the stigma that the executives of companies are cut off from the rest of the employees. It was filled with Mac computers which are very clean and slick, which contributed to the overall youth culture. Also, there were long tables that resembles small pods, as well as other smaller spaces that smaller groups of people could work in together. The best part of all was the cute dogs that roamed the workplace, which made for a family-style environment where everyone was relaxed, happy, and ready to produce the best work possible, which was displayed in their products for both Dannon and Samsung. All in all, the experience in Big Spaceship was unforgettable and was a great example of a possible workplace for marketing students out of college.

Artistix

The class then visited the design studio of Artistix, a clothing brand operated by Andy Hilfiger, brother of fashion icon Tommy Hilfiger. Being in a design studio was both interesting and fun to look at the processes from initial designing to seeing the clothes come alive, as well as listening to Mr. Hilfiger speak about his brand and how he sets his clothing apart from others. Artistix uses designs and colors from artists who wish for their paintings to be turned into clothing. Andy Hilfiger also uses rock bands as inspirations for his clothing due to his passion and participation in that area of entertainment. Overall, going to the design studio was a fun experience that I will never forget.

This course has showed me many experiential learning opportunities for future careers, and how powerful the entertainment, media, and sports industry is in marketing. I hope you enjoyed reading about my adventures during this course and hope that this blog interests you to take the course or learn more about the marketing industry. Thanks for your attention,

Kristin

Colegrove, A., Week 5

Welcome back to my blog everyone !

Unfortunately this is going to be my last post since the course is done. These past five weeks have been filled with great adventures and learning experiences. For our last trip of the class we went to........ NEW YORK CITY! New York City is always fun to go to. Even though I live so close to the city this trip was still great. We went to parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan that I have never went to so this was a new experience for me as well. First we went to an advertising agency called The Big Spaceship in Brooklyn, then we met with Glenys Salas who is a Senior Media Analyst at Ai Media Group, then we met with Andy Hilfiger and were able to see his new Artistix fall fashion line.

The Big Spaceship is located in the DUMBO district of Brooklyn. It is an advertising agency that has worked with big companies such as YouTube, Google Play, BMW, and Samsung just to name a few. We met with Senior Account Manager Olga Bermudez-Paiva who is an Elmira College alum along with her team. The atmosphere of the place was very laid back and relaxed. I loved how they liked to have fun but they also got their work done when they needed to.

We then met with Glenys Salas where we had a lunch sit-down presentation about the digital market. It was a chill atmosphere since it was not formal. Glenys was great and she taught us about what it hot and relevant in terms of social media sites in companies. While talking to her I found out she lives five minutes from my house so that was funny to find out.

Lastly we went to meet with Andy Hilfiger (Tommy’s brother) where we got to see his new 2017 fall fashion line. I always wanted to see what goes into creating a fashion line. Andy and his crew were great host and they made the trip very entertaining and engaging. He told us about his stories where he would dress people like Jennifer Lopez, Snoop Dogg, and Puffy. He also told us about his band and the people he played with such as Kid Rock. The work he put into his company to create a name for himself is inspiring and the fact that he came from Elmira makes it even better.

After these trips we had some downtime where we were able to walk around Manhattan. We went to see Radio City Music Hall, NBC headquarters, and Rockefeller Center. This trip was a great experience along with the rest of the trips we went on the entire term. Doing this blog the past five weeks was fun and I hope you guys enjoyed learning about what we did in this class.

Hughson, S., Week 5

Welcome to the last weekly post!

This week's big trip was to New York City! There we visited the advertising agency Big Spaceship, met with Elmira College alum Glenys, and met Andy Hilfiger (Tommy Hilfiger's brother). This trip was filled with information and was an amazing experience, my blog today will discuss the main take aways from each of the locations we went to on this trip!

The first stop was to an advertising agency in Brooklyn called, Big Spaceship. This visit was my favorite of the day because of how informative it was, how they spoke to us like adults, and encouraged us to be creative and follow our passions! The atmosphere of the company was unlike any advertising agency I would have pictured. It was open, filled with macs and technology, had ping pong, puppies, and yoga. Definitely an office for the millennials who are creative thinkers and love to work in a team like environment. Every person that we spoke to clearly loved their jobs and we passionate about what they do which is an amazing thing to see in addition to them telling us to find a company that is invested in you and not just getting work done. Not only was the environment and atmosphere cool but the companies they work with and the work that they do was also very interesting to hear about. The big companies they work for are Samsung, Google, Purina, King, YouTube, and several others. They taught us how they work with these companies through promotional strategies and creative designs.

The next stop was to lunch with another Elmira College Alum, Glenys, who spoke to us about her digital marketing company and her career path that got her to where she is today. What I really liked about her presentation was how she laid out articles that addressed different digital marketing trends and how current marketers are adapting and the strategies they are using to keep up to date and on top of the new trends. She then spoke to us about being a media analyst and how it is important to know the data and be able to support your work with metrics.

Last but not least we were able to meet with Andy Hilfiger, Tommy Hilfiger's brother! While Tommy Hilfiger is very well known because of his clothing brand, Andy has a pretty amazing and successful life as well. Andy spoke to us about his fashion work and how he is able to combine all of his favorite things and hobbies together and is able to show that off to the world through his fashion designs. The biggest thing I took from Andy, besides the fact that he has an amazing life, is that he never loses sight of his passions. He is able to combine them all and wouldn't trade that for anything! He also stated the theme of the course being that relationships are key and it is so important to maintain relationships with everyone.

9.1. Big Spaceship - Digital Ad Agency, Brooklyn NY "Dumbo"

Huntley, M. Week 5

Hello Everyone, Welcome Back!

This past week our class took a trip to the Big Apple itself, New York City! While the traffic was not great on the way to the city, the rest of the trip was very interesting and exciting!

When we first got to the city, we visited an advertising agency in Dumbo, Brooklyn called Big Spaceship. This was such a great experience, because one of the speakers at Big Spaceship was an EC grad! It was so amazing to see how Ulga has grown from being a college student and come to be a worker for such an interesting company. At Big Spaceship all of the employees are very hip and casually dressed. The workspace consists of a large open room with tables and computers that they refer to as "pods."

They showed us around the workplace, then we got to sit and learn about what clients they have worked with and what they do. The client that I found most interesting was that they were working with Samsung when they sponsored the Rio Olympics. This led the worker to spending three weeks in Rio, working to keep up with the marketing necessary for the Olympics.

The next part of our trip consisted of visiting Andy Hilfiger's studio. This was personally my favorite experience throughout the course, because I think that the fashion industry is incredible. Andy took us through his studio, and into his design room, which was incredible.

He spoke to our class about how he keeps up with the fashion industry, and also how he targets the 18-24 year-old demographic. Andy does partnerships with artists, or bands to create and bring attention to his designs. He also has a staff of millennials working for him, who run his social media accounts to get his designs out to the public.

Thanks so much for tuning in over the course of the past 5 weeks, I hope you enjoyed my course as much as I did!

Mcklevis. J., Week 5

Our final week and final field trip have brought us to NEW YORK CITY!

Big Spaceship

Our trip to NYC brought us first to an advertising agency in Brooklyn. The Big Spaceship was absolutely amazing. Walking in to an open environment with employees dressed very casually and dogs running around was unique. This type of environment seemed very appealing to the young millennial generation. The employees worked in “pods” and the office was organized according to the accounts that were being managed. I liked the idea that the whole area was open, literally, because this promoted and encouraged each of the teams to collaborate and it created a friendly environment. Hearing about all of the clients they work with (Google, Under Armor, Purina, Haribros, Dannon, Samsung, King, YouTube, etc.) was surprising. I wouldn’t have thought about how these larger companies would need the help for some of their advertising and that they would use an outside agency.

The biggest thing I took away from visiting this agency was to find a company that is invested in you, and one that actually worries about if you are happy. Ulga mentioned that working in the advertising industry has a high burn out rate so it is important to be happy while you are working. It was interesting that this agency had a ping pong table and that they actually had outside clubs, almost like a college campus.

We then had a luncheon meeting with another alumna from Elmira College, Glenys, and she gave us her real world experiences of life after college. She gave us a few articles that touched on the ideas of how digital technology is really changing the world around us and how we interact, which in turn changes the changes the way we market to people.

After our second meeting, we made a last minute stop to visit Andy
Hilfiger, Tommy Hilfiger's brother. He also works in the world of fashion and art and he has able to give us a few tips on how to work in those industries. With the world of fashion, it is important to take risks and to think outside of the box. You have to remember the type of audience you are targeting and keep in mind all of the work that goes in to creating a new line of clothing. It is super important to maintain relationships, especially when you are working with clients like Snoop Dogg, Nicki Minaj, and  JLo.
